WHY SAVE SALMON AND STEELHEAD?
We believe salmon and steelhead runs are worth recovering. There are many good reasons to save these fish, but here are the top four:
People Need to Eat
Over the last 3000 years, people worldwide have consumed more salmon than any other fish. Historically, no other animal has accounted for as much global protein consumption as the salmon; not the pig, not the chicken and not even the cow.
Ecological Health
Salmon play a critical role in the food chain for a variety of fish, mammal, bird and plant species by bringing ocean nutrients into our watersheds. When salmon disappear, so will the health of our watersheds.
Regional Economic Health
Salmon and steelhead make tremendous contributions to the economies of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California. Sales of fishing licenses, tourism, retail sales (boats, gear and fish) and the creation of jobs add up to billions of dollars. Social Importance
Salmon has played a significant role in defining the industry and culture of the Pacific Northwest for centuries. To lose the salmon is to lose history. Yet, we are headed toward such a fate, unless we change our practices.
